Mark Parris, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey and visiting fellow, The Brookings Institution, “Common Values and Common Interests? The Bush Legacy in U.S.-Turkish Relations,” October–December 2008:
“What can the administration … do to reboot U.S.–Turkish relations? It needs to … [p]ut Turkey in the top tier. The … President and his foreign policy team should … make it a priority to develop close personal relations with their Turkish counterparts. Given Turkey’s event-rich neighborhood, it will not take long for their investment to pay dividends. … As [the president] seeks to rebuild American credibility and leadership, some countries will be able to help—or hurt—more than others. Turkey is such a country. The … U.S. administration has an enormous interest in doing everything possible from Day One to ensure Turkey ends up on the right list.”
