Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, September 17, 2007:
"I have a good deal of respect for the Syrian leader and for Syrian policy. They have internal problems, but we have no reason to rule out dialogue with Syria. If conditions ripen, we are ready to make peace with Syria, with no preconditions and no ultimate demands."
Syrian government newspaper Tishreen in response to Olmert’s statement, September 19, 2007:
“If Israel is really honest about its declaration, then the road to peace is to return to the negotiating table from where talks stopped."
